Our purpose

Helping good events happen — and last

Community support and engagement aren't just part of our work — they're the core that sustains and amplifies everything we do. We provide connection to education, resources, and governance support to help organizations protect their mission and build long-term stability.

Through transparent governance, clear goals, and practical training, we empower volunteers and community members to create measurable, lasting impact in their communities and their events.

How we govern

Foundational principles of governance

The Catalyst Events Board of Directors is built on the foundational principles of Purpose-Driven Board Leadership (PDBL) — a shift in thinking and orientation toward the board's role. Less a structure or set of technical practices than a way of being and thinking, this mindset is defined by four fundamental, mutually reinforcing, and interdependent principles.

Purpose before organization

Prioritizing the organization's purpose over the organization itself. It reframes the duty of loyalty, focusing it on collective purpose and how the organization can best steward its resources in service to that purpose — rather than centering only the organization itself.

Respect for ecosystem

An acknowledgment that the organization is part of a collection of organizations working to address community-wide challenges and impacts — recognizing that its actions can positively or negatively affect its surrounding ecosystem, and committing to being a respectful and responsible ecosystem player.

Equity mindset

A commitment to advancing equitable outcomes, and to interrogating and avoiding the ways in which the organization's strategies and work — allocation of resources, board composition and culture, and more — may reinforce systemic inequities.

Authorized voice and power

The recognition that organizational power and voice must be authorized by those impacted by the organization's work. This means engaging directly with those we seek to serve, so decisions are made with a real understanding of community assets, needs, preferences, and aspirations.

Applying the PDBL framework during board deliberations keeps the organization's purpose at the center, especially in uncertain times. During periods of rapid change or crisis, it offers a way to pause and reframe questions, discussions, and answers — helping the board shift from fear and anxiety to clarity and purpose.

Our commitment

Acting with institutional courage

The Catalyst Events Board of Directors is committed to acting with Institutional Courage in all that we do: an institution's commitment to seek the truth and engage in moral action, despite unpleasantness, risk, and short-term cost. It envisions a future where our institutions act with accountability and transparency, actively seeking justice and making change.

This commitment is a pledge to protect and care for those who depend on the institution. It is a compass oriented to the common good of individuals, institutions, and the world — a force that transforms institutions into more accountable, equitable, and effective places for everyone. It includes accountability, transparency, making reparations where needed, and being responsive to our members.

We make this commitment at a time when many are tempted by two familiar myths — that a few "bad apples" are the problem, and that we can be passive because "time will fix it." We aim to tackle those myths head-on, and to serve as a guiding light: a reminder that structures, policies, and bystander silence enable harm — and that progress comes from persistent, values-driven effort.
